The depth of spiritualism and the role religion plays in the every day lives of all Bhutanese is embodied in the hundreds of religious structures and artifacts that dot the country’s length and breadth. Bhutan is a spiritual nation and these sacred monasteries, stupas, religious institution, prayer flags and prayer wheels provide a strong infrastructure and atmosphere for the teachings of their living faith.

The performance of religious ceremonies and rituals is another testimony of Bhutan’s spiritual depth. This is not confined to rural Bhutan alone, but also in urban centers. Buddhist scriptures are the basis from which horoscopes are drawn. Festivals at the national and regional levels are major religious and social events for the people all through the year. It is these combined factors which has sieved the Bhutanese image, with the world regarding the Kingdom with special importance as the last bastion of Mahayana Buddhism.
